Do you own a small grooming salon/business or work as a mobile groomer? The AKC Safety in the Salon course helps you show your customers, community, and employees how important you consider a pet’s safety while in your care. It covers vital information on safety measures and protocols within the grooming facility and can be completed at your own pace.

You’ll receive course access for yourself as the salon/business owner, plus online course access and certification for three employees (totaling 4 certifications for your salon).

The AKC Safety in the Salon course covers vital information on safety measures and protocols within the grooming facility and can be completed at your own pace.

Topics Covered:

  • Groomer and grooming salon safety protocols
  • Best practices focusing on pet care and safety
  • Accident avoidance and sanitation
  • How to handle special cases

All salons/businesses who pass the course exam are eligible to become AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Salons. Just complete your application, which includes salon safety oath commitment, photos submission, and an emergency/disaster plan, and submit it to the AKC for processing.

Once the course is passed and the application is approved, AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Salons receive valuable marketing support, including:

  • Custom printed frameable certificate
  • AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Groomer/Salon Oath counter card
  • Free profile listing on AKC GroomerFinder for one year
  • AKC GroomerFinder S.A.F.E. Certified Salon badge recognition
  • AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Salon digital badge
  • AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Salon window decal

* AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Salon criteria include always having at least one AKC S.A.F.E. Certified Groomer onsite during grooming business hours.

** Please allow 2-4 weeks for application review and processing. If you do not pass the test, you can re-take it multiple times for 30 days at no additional charge.

Here is the course outline:

1. Part 1 Introduction to Salon Safety

This module will cover AKC S.A.F.E. groomer and salon expectations, safety rules, and decision making.

2. Part 2 Handling Animals

This module will cover retrieving pets from owners, refusing service when appropriate, lifting a dog’s legs, grooming brachycephalic skull dogs, and handling cats.

3. Part 3 Grooming Services

This module will cover educating your clients about pet care and services and grooming techniques to prevent injuries to the pet and yourself.

4. Part 4 Groomer Safety

This module will cover steps groomers can take to minimize their risk of injury and using protective gear when grooming animals.

5. Part 5 The Grooming Facility

This module will cover how to maintain a safe salon entrance, grooming work area, and best practices for cage-free grooming salon.

6. Part 6 Rules and Regulations

This module will cover groomer liability insurance, relevant OSHA regulations, and working with inspectors.

7. SAFE Salon Final Exam
